What is Trauma Sensitive Yoga?

Trauma Sensitive Yoga (specifically Trauma Center, Trauma Sensitive Yoga - TCTSY) is a modified style of yoga that presents psychologically safe opportunities for survivors of complex trauma to safely connect with, experience, and interact with their bodies.

Based on a robust model of scientific theory, TCTSY was developed and researched by some of the world’s leading professionals in the field of trauma therapy and treatment, in collaboration with yoga teachers, and critically - survivors of complex trauma.

In 2017 TCTSY became the first and currently only yoga style to be recognized as an evidence-based practice for the treatment of complex trauma

Why is Trauma Sensitive Yoga important?

Acknowledging your body can feel really scary and confusing if you’ve experienced abuse, maltreatment or interpersonal violence of any kind. It is, in fact, a common and normal response to NOT want to feel your body...and to actively avoid doing so.

This makes TOTAL sense. After all, our bodies are the landscapes upon which all experiences are absorbed, remembered, and take place.

It can be a challenge then, when as part of your recovery you decide you want to connect with your body, but require a safely facilitated and trauma-informed framework for doing so.

Trauma Sensitive Yoga is designed to support you with this; It offers a psychologically safe opportunity to engage with and notice your body, within a professional, trauma-informed therapeutic relationship and physical environment.

What should I expect?

During any given practice you are in total and complete control of your body at all times. You will be invited to choose how you wish to interact with your body within the context of yoga postures, for which many options and choices are provided.

As a facilitator, I practice together with you, and may draw your attention to different physical sensations connected to the postures we practice together. You are empowered with the freedom to choose, adjust, and explore each posture based on what you feel in your body, free of judgement or any external influence. Our physical space is as clear as possible of any visual and sensory triggers that might interfere.

There is no need for any prior yoga experience.

Trauma Sensitive Yoga is accessible to all body types, ages and backgrounds.

As a facilitator, my training and understanding of how complex trauma impacts a person’s relationship with their body and other people is extensive. I promise a safe, respectful space, and to use my knowledge and expertise to support you in your healing process in whatever way I can.
